Modern Homestead

Charlottesville, VA - Southeast
The community of Keswick, in the Piedmont area of Virginia, is the site of the 2025 Southern Living Idea House. The design had many influences: the abundance of historic regional architecture, the relationship with the five-acre site and the land beyond, and the need to interpret these influences to serve a modern lifestyle. The goals of longevity, beauty, and design integrity informed the architect’s material specifications. Decking and porch flooring were chosen from the TimberTech® Advanced PVC Vintage Collection® in English Walnut®, complemented by Impression Rail Express® Railing to create an organic transition between the charming home and its gardens and grounds. The realistic wood look of TimberTech was of primary importance for this high-end residential project, but the value of low maintenance, rot resistance, and long lifespan in the face of the region’s weather extremes helped assure its specification. A sustainability profile superior to wood was an added benefit. Other exterior materials included Hardie® Artisan® Siding, Hardie® Trim, and decorative PVC panels from INTEX® Millwork.
